One man died and two others were injured Friday afternoon in a two-car crash in eastern Whitley County.
Indiana State Police say that a Hyundai Sonata driven by John W. Stroup, 70, of rural Columbia City was headed east on U.S. 30 about Whitley County Road 700 East, about four miles east of Columbia City. At about 3:25 p.m., the Sonata began a turn north onto 700 East and collided with a westbound Pontiac Montana driven by Darrell L. Jeffrey, 55, who lived in northern Allen County. Although he was wearing a seatbelt, Jeffrey died in the crash, which caused the Montana to roll at least once.
A passenger in the Montana, Richard B. Falk, 62, of Ossian, was thrown from the van. He was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center with what State Police called “life-threatening injuries.” A second passenger in the the same vehicle, Lovis P. Ort, 72, of Fort Wayne, suffered less serious injuries – State Police said the injuries were not life-threatening – and was taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center.
Stroup, his wife and two juvenile children were all wearing seatbelts in the crash, and none of them had to be hospitalized, State Police report.
The crash remains under investigation.
