♦First step toward the organization of a fire department in Fort Wayne taken.

♦Hugh McCulloch settles in Fort Wayne. He would later become Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.

♦Steamship Royal William crosses Atlantic from Nova Scotia to England.


1834

♦First carriages appear in Fort Wayne, having been brought by boat from Pittsburgh.

♦Marquis de Lafayette, who fought on the Patriot side of the Revolutionary War, dies in France.

♦Cyrus McCormick patents his grain reaper.

♦First night watch established in city.

♦Noah Noble becomes governor of Indiana.

♦Inquisition abolished in Spain.


1835

♦Grand opening of the Wabash & Erie Canal from Fort Wayne to Huntington (then known as Flint Springs) is July 4.

♦Samuel F. B. Morse invents the telegraph.

♦The Fort Wayne branch of the State Bank of Indiana is established.

♦Chicago land office is opened.

♦U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall dies.
