Fair days ahead
Animals, concerts, contests await at Allen County Fair
of The News-Sentinel

When it comes to the Allen County Fair, there is no doubt this is an animal planet.

Pudgy porkers snore in pens like sunbathers on a sawdust beach. Cats, goats, horses and llamas glam up as all sorts of zany characters for the costume class judging. Cattle ask you to kindly moo-o-o-ve along in the cattle barn.

Animals will have to share the spotlight with two new events for humans this year, however, during the fair's run Tuesday-July 28 at the Allen County Fairgrounds. Both events will take place at the Pull Strip at the back left portion of the fairgrounds; admission is part of the regular fair ticket price.

♦Contractors' Rodeo, 7 p.m. Wednesday

Think home-remodeling show meets the “Wipeout” wacky challenge reality show. Building contractors or their workers can compete in one or more of three timed tasks: operating a skid loader, working an excavator and using a front-end loader, said Jerry Hammon, fair president.

Contestants will face a few curveballs, such as being required to use the excavator to knock tennis balls off cones and using the skid loader to maneuver a load through an obstacle course, Hammon said.

The person who completes a task successfully — or the closest thing to it — in the least amount of time will win that task, Hammon said. Entry fee is $5 for contestants. Entry fees collected for each task will be paid out as cash prizes for first, second and third places.

♦Redneck Relays, 7:30 p.m. July 24

Get three people and a pickup. The driver has to be at least 16 and have a valid driver's license, Hammon said. The other team members can be any age or either gender.

The team must load 25 bales of straw in the pickup, drive through an obstacle course and unload the straw, Hammon said. The fastest team wins.

There's more

Fair entertainment organizers are excited about their evening music lineup, which includes the Echo Valley bluegrass band on July 24, Biff and the Cruisers oldies rock on July 25, and country music groups Wild Rodeo and Huckleberry Blue on July 26. Entry to the concerts is included in fair admission.

The Biff and the Cruisers concert takes place in conjunction with the fair's Classic Car Cruise-in, which has attracted 60 to 90 vehicles on a nice night, said Rick Slayback, cruise-in coordinator.

Fair organizers also are trying to expand offerings on July 27 — a Sunday — to make it more of a family day, said Ken Buinowski, the entertainment stage coordinator.

That day, fair admission is free from 7 a.m. until the grounds close at 6 p.m., Buinowski said. Midway rides are $1 each from 2 to 6 p.m. Lawnmower races begin at 1 p.m. at the Pull Strip; admission is $3.
