March, Baker are IHSAA's best
of The News-Sentinel

INDIANAPOLIS -- Taylor March passed out the sweaty hugs without a care. And why not? After four years, after three trips to the state wrestling finals, the East Noble senior finally had his championship.

March edged previously unbeaten Mitchell Richey of Brown County 4-3 to win the 135-pound crown Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse.

March had finished second at 112 and at 119, and third at 125, before finally getting to stand atop the awards podium.

March (39-1) beat Mishawaka’s Trenton Reinoehl 7-1 in Saturday morning’s quarterfinals and previously unbeaten Will Mascaro of Carmel 3-0 in the semifinals.

Bellmont’s Billy Baker (42-0) proved the merit to his top ranking by defeating Mishawaka’s Christian Lentz 4-1 to win the 215-pound title.

Baker had earlier beaten Lentz 9-4 and 8-4. He scored the clinching takedown with 20 seconds left.

Baker defeated New Palestine’s Antonio Halbert 15-5 in the quarterfinals and Lowell’s Nathan Cleveland 2-0 in the semifinals.

Carroll’s Brock Norton (37-1) placed third by winning by injury default against Mishawaka’s Joshua Harper in the consolation finals. Harper had won state titles his first three seasons, but couldn’t overcome a shoulder injury.

Norton won his quarterfinal match 11-6 over Perry Meridian’s Sampson Cook. He lost in the semifinals to Hobart’s Francisco Porras 5-4.

Bishop Luers’ Anthony Lovejoy (42-2) placed fifth at 125. He beat Yorktown’s Andrew Heistand 6-3 in the consolation finals.

Bluffton’s Matt Gerber (38-6) placed eighth at 135 after losing 7-4 to Angola’s Rickey Furar.

North Side’s Aris Allen (40-2) placed fifth at 215. He beat Brownsburg’s Adam Howland 8-6 in the consolation finals.

Leo’s Cameron Friend (36-3) placed seventh at 145. He beat Yorktown’s Jordan Dulaney 7-2 in the consolation finals.

Adam Central’s Trey Schultz (34-4) placed eighth at 171. He lost to Delphi’s Braden Atwood 7-3 in the consolation finals.

Lovejoy lost in the quarterfinals to Anderson Highland’s Mason Berryman 3-2. Allen’s quarterfinal loss came 7-1 in overtime to Warren Central’s unbeaten Gabriel Berry. Friend lost 11-1 in the quarterfinals to Daniel Young of Culver. Schultz lost to Center Grove’s Shelby Mappes by pin in the quarterfinals.

Also, Russ Isaacs and Tom Bennett, both of Snider, will be inducted into the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame today.

Isaacs was honored for his days as Snider wrestling coach and as a long-time wrestling official who retired after last season. He still teaches and coaches football at Snider.

Bennett was the 138-pound state champ in 1982, the 138 runner-up in 1981 and a 1983 state qualifier.
