Luers-Tipton game pits top 2 teams in 2A, and they're well-matched.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 10:01 am
The Class 2A state championship game won't be played for another two weeks, but the eventual outcome might be decided at noon Saturday (Fort Wayne time) at Tipton. No. 1-ranked Tipton hosts No. 2 Bishop Luers in a rematch from last year's regional, when the Knights won 74-62 on their way to the state title. Both teams are arguably better than last year.

Tipton, 23-2, is led by Indiana recruit and Mr. Basketball candidate Derek Elston, who averages 20 points, 11 rebounds and three assists per game. The Blue Devils also get 12 points and four assists per game from guard Greg Dickey, and 10 points and five rebounds a game from forward Kyle Coleman.

The Blue Devils will likely be the biggest team Bishop Luers will face all season. Elston measures 6-foot-9, Coleman is 6-5, Ethan Jacobs is 7-foot and Luke Overdorf is 6-8.

Tipton is the state's second-best defensive team, giving up 38.8 points per game and holding three sectional opponents to 22 percent shooting, including an 11-0 first quarter in the championship game against Guerin Catholic. The Blue Devils, who have an average victory margin of 24.9, gave up more than 50 points in a game only four times this season and won all four of those games.

Bishop Luers, 19-4, is almost the direct opposite in terms of style. The Knights have the state's seventh-highest scoring team at 73.6 per game, and they have scored more than 90 points five times. 2010 Mr. Basketball candidate and Ohio State recruit Deshaun Thomas averages 30.7 points and 15.2 rebounds per game.

But he's not a one-man team. Lawrence Barnett averages 11.1 points and three assists, Kenny Mullen 9.2 points and 4.8 assists and Evan Blackmon 11.3 points and 4.6 rebounds. Sean Day averages 5.5 points, three blocks and 5.7 rebounds.

As far as strength of schedule, the Knights have the big advantage with the state's 59th-toughest slate, according to the Sagarin Ratings. Tipton's schedule was ranked 159th. The teams played one common opponent, both beating Bluffton.

Tipton played a trio of Class 4A schools this season, and lost to Kokomo and Franklin Central. Bishop Luers lost only to Class 4A schools Snider, Lawrence North and Warsaw along with Chicago Currie.

The Bishop Luers-Tipton survivor takes on the winner of the 10 a.m. North Miami, 18-5, versus Carroll (Flora), 19-4, winner for the championship at 8 p.m.

The Bishop Luers-Tipton game will be broadcast locally on WLYV, 1450-AM, and on Comcast Digital on channel 81.
