Whitley County camp director faces sex charges
of The News-Sentinel

Allegations have surfaced about an inappropriate sexual relationship between a summer camp director and a boy in Whitley County.

A probable-cause affidavit filed in Whitley Circuit Court on Thursday alleges Tara Brandon, while serving as camp director of Camp Whitley, had sex with a boy under the age of 18 - who was employed as a camp counselor - a minimum of 15 times.

Brandon, 38, of Columbia City, was arrested Thursday on 15 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and 18 counts of child seduction, according to the Whitley County Jail. The boy told police he and Brandon engaged in sexual contact 10-15 times over the summer of 2007, and 8-10 times over the summer of 2008 - though “rarely” at the camp and “never when campers were at the camp,” wrote Charles Vogely, a detective with the Whitley County Sheriff's Department, in the affidavit.

Police then interviewed another Camp Whitley counselor, who told police he witnessed what he thought to be a sexual relationship between Brandon and the boy earlier this year, according to the affidavit.

The boy told police that throughout his relationship with Brandon, she would text-message his girlfriend “bad-mouthing” with an interest in “discouraging a relationship with John Doe.” The girlfriend confirmed the allegations with police, the affidavit said.

Camp Whitley is about 10 miles northwest of Columbia City.

Brandon was released from the Whitley County Jail this morning after posting a $50,000 bond.
