Not eight weeks into his stay inside Allen County Lockup, extradited, accused child molester Miguel M. Vazquez admitted to the crime Monday in Allen Superior Court.
Vazquez, 27, who was shipped back to Allen County in June after being arrested in Mexico last August by U.S. and Mexican federal authorities, agreed to a plea deal before Magistrate Robert Schmoll that dropped two counts of child molesting and amended the remaining child molesting charge to a Class B felony.
The deal calls for Vazquez to serve 15 years in prison, should the court accept it at Vazquez's Aug. 28 sentencing.
The advisory sentence for a Class B felony is 10 years, but because a Class A felony and a Class C felony were dropped as part of the agreement, the remaining Class A felony was downgraded to a Class B though with a heightened sentence suggestion.
Vazquez, who molested a then-4-year-old girl sometime between June 26 and 27, 2004, said only “yes” and “no” through an interpreter to Schmoll's questioning.
A medical examination of the girl revealed evidence of sexual battery, according to Vazquez's probable-cause affidavit.
Vazquez was arrested Aug. 20 in Puebla in northern Mexico – where police said he was working at a hot-sauce factory – and arrived in Fort Wayne on June 9.
The Allen County Prosecutor's Office paid to bring Vazquez back to face the charges.
