No foul play found in death at jail

An autopsy shows no signs of foul play in the death of an inmate at the Allen County Jail on Thursday, but some test results are pending.

The 41-year-old Fort Wayne woman’s death is still under investigation and no cause is being released at this time, according to a news release from Allen County Coroner E. Jon Brandenberger.

Emergency workers were called to the jail, 417 S. Calhoun St., after 3 p.m. The inmate was being held on an operating while intoxicated charge.

Auburn man charged with neglect

An Auburn father faces felony neglect charges after police say he left his 3-year-old son in the car in the parking lot of a northwest-side bar while he drank inside for more than an hour. Jason C. Conn, 36, is alleged to have left his son in the car while he drank at the Dupont Bar and Grill, 10336 Leo Road, around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 4, according to Conn’s probable-cause affidavit.

At some point, the young boy got out of the car – wearing a sweat shirt, sweat pants and shoes in 19-degree weather – and began searching for Conn, “crying and asking for his daddy,” the affidavit said.

A passer-by stopped and took the boy into a nearby gas station to warm up, the affidavit said.

Conn took the boy from witnesses trying to stop him from leaving, the affidavit said. A witness took down his plate number as the two left.

City man faces a rape charge

A rape charge has been filed against a city man accused of meeting his victim online, then in person, where he immediately raped her and subsequently impregnated her.

Antoine J. Island, 26, of the 2100 block of Eden Street, allegedly met a woman on the Internet and told her he was 18 before she agreed to meet him in person sometime between December 2007 and February 2008, according to Island’s probable-cause affidavit.

She became pregnant and gave birth in September 2008, the affidavit said. A paternity test revealed with 99.9 percent certainty that Island was the father, the affidavit said.

Island told police he not only never had sex with the woman before, he said he hadn’t even touched her, the affidavit said.

Plea deal nets jail term, probation

A city man who Fort Wayne Police say fought with them before an officer shocked him with a Taser pleaded guilty Thursday in Allen Superior Court to two of three counts against him. Brent A. Dasher, 27, of the 6300 block of Orange Drive, admitted to resisting law enforcement and battery by bodily waste, both Class D felonies. The deal calls for Dasher to serve one year a piece, but to be served concurrently, plus a year of probation.

Dasher scuffled with Fort Wayne Police Officer Brett Lee on May 14, according to Dasher’s arrest affidavit. Lee said he sprayed Dasher with mace, and Dasher curled up in the fetal position. Lee said he shocked Dasher with the Taser because Dasher refused to be handcuffed. While being driven to Parkview Hospital, Dasher is accused of spitting on a paramedic. Dasher will be sentenced Nov. 16.

Free H1N1 vaccines for pregnant women, kids

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health is offering free injectable H1N1 vaccines while supplies last Monday at Carew Medical Park for pregnant women and children ages 6 months through 18 years. The clinic, 1818 Carew St., on the Parkview Hospital campus, will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

More than 4,800 people have been vaccinated for the H1N1 virus since the clinic opened Oct. 9. The seasonal flu vaccine is no longer available.

Parkview Health’s hospitals in the surrounding communities – Parkview Huntington Hospital, Parkview LaGrange Hospital, Parkview Noble Hospital and Parkview Whitley Hospital – are taking the same steps to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus as the Fort Wayne and Allen County hospitals announced Thursday.

People under 18 years old are no longer allowed to visit patients. Further restrictions include only two adults per patient. For details, go to www.fighttheflu.org/ or call 211.

Diseases added to Agent Orange exposure

According to the Allen County Veterans Service Office, three diseases have been added to the list of ailments recognized as having a “presumed” connection to Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War. The addition of B cell leukemias, Parkinson’s Disease and ischemic heart disease bring the number of presumed illnesses recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs to 15, meaning Vietnam veterans don’t have to prove a connection between their illness and their military service, thereby speeding the application process for benefits. Lane closures

The south curb lane of Fernhill Avenue will be closed just west of Lima Road beginning Monday for about a week as contractor Geiger Developing installs a storm sewer structure on the south side of Fernhill.

The lane closure will require eastbound traffic attempting to go through or turn right onto Lima Road to merge into the left-turn lane, likely causing considerable congestion. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.

♦The Fort Wayne district of the Indiana Department of Transportation announced that the northbound driving lane on Interstate 469 between mile marker 16 and 17.2 (Minnick Road and Tillman Road) is scheduled to be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday for maintenance work, weather permitting.

♦Clinton Street near the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge will have lane restrictions throughout next week as a contractor performs soil borings to prepare for the bridge replacement in 2010 and 2011. All lane restrictions will start after 8 a.m. Drivers are reminded to use extra time or alternate routes.

The restrictions are as follows:

♦Monday (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.): Westbound lane of 4th Street on the east side of Clinton Street, eastbound lane of 4th Street on the west side of Clinton Street, eastern lane of Clinton north of the 4th Street intersection, western lane of Clinton south of the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge.

♦ Tuesday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.): Western lane of Clinton between the 4th Street intersection and the bridge.

♦Wednesday (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.): Western lane of Clinton near the southern end of the bridge.

♦Thursday and Friday (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.): Center lane of Clinton on the bridge.
