Thanks to Indiana Tech donation, Science Central adds classroom
By Ashley Smith

It's been years since Science Central has seen construction within its walls. But with the help of Indiana Tech, that was remedied today.

Science Central was to unveil its new Indiana Tech Discovery Lab this morning during a special ceremony. The classroom space provides needed room for meetings, educational opportunities and even birthday parties.

“They've had a bad need for another classroom,” said Martin Fisher, executive director of Science Central, which has been in operation for 14 years. He said the space has already been used for Lego robotics training, a frog dissection lab and a board meeting.

Previously, Science Central had only one designated classroom space and one designated public display space that could cater to those needs. Fisher said the Discovery Lab helps to alleviate some stress on building space and allows for more traveling exhibits.

Fisher, who has been executive director for two years, said he had recognized the need for quite some time, but needed sponsorship before construction could move forward.

Money from Indiana Tech made the classroom possible, he said.

“Indiana Tech chose to be involved with this project because we want to encourage young students to take an active interest in learning about the exciting world of science and technology,” Mark Richter, Indiana Tech vice president for institutional advancement, said in a statement.

“The Indiana Tech Discovery Lab will give students an opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments and demonstrations of scientific principles.”

Construction was completed during the first week of September.

Fisher said no new construction projects are planned yet, but new traveling exhibits are moving in every two months.
