Two homicides have shaken the countryside of Wells County in less than a week.

Justin Sprow, 19, of Uniondale, was killed when a pickup approached his car and someone in the truck opened gunfire on him and his passenger. His passenger, Randy Haney, 19, also from Uniondale, was not injured.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. Wednesday when the truck containing suspects Cody Barkley, 18, Jonathan Thatcher, 18, Dustin Jackson, 22, and an unidentified 17-year-old juvenile, all of Adams County, came upon Sprow's vehicle at the intersection of county roads 800 North and 100 West, according to a news release from the Wells County Sheriff's Department.

The release said Haney was able to get out of the car after the shooting and hide in a cornfield to call 911.

The four suspects, who originally fled, were arrested early this morning in Decatur and are being held at the Wells County Sheriff's Department, pending formal charges that will come later today, according to Sheriff Bob Frantz.

Frantz said this morning that the shooting was the result of problems over a drug deal. He called having two homicides within one week unusual and said it has been three and a half years since Wells County has seen a homicide.

The first homicide this week happened Tuesday evening when 28-year-old Amy White, a former IPFW and University of Saint Francis basketball player, was allegedly shot to death by her husband in a home at 649 E. 100 S. in Bluffton, Wells County Sheriff's Detective Lt. Jim Paxton said.

Her husband, Tyler White, 27, of Bluffton, was formally charged with murder Wednesday. Paxton said the death was the result of a domestic dispute.

Both homicide cases are under investigation.
