Southern Wells faces No. 1 team
The Southern Wells Raiders will try for their second semistate in school history when they host Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class A semistate at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Poneto.
Southern Wells' task is a huge one. Lafayette Central Catholic (13-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A and is coming off a 56-0 regional win over Culver. Lafayette Central Catholic has allowed only 29 points in 13 games - and almost half of those came in a 58-13 win over Caston. The Knights have shut out eight opponents, including two in the postseason.
Southern Wells (11-2) has been stingy on defense, too, allowing only 6.4 points per game over their last seven games. The Raiders romped over Knightstown 41-14 last week, and will again rely on their solid ground game (272.3 yards per game), led by Tyler Roush, Jacob Miller and Kyle Jones. The Raiders have held opponents to 84.2 yards rushing per game, and will likely need to match that to pull off the upset.
