University of Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis said he wants to keep his job, but couldn’t argue if he was fired after another so-so season. Times are tough at Notre Dame when the football coach won’t even give himself a vote of confidence. Speaking of the Fighting Irish, the Chicago Tribune reports that quarterback Jimmy Clausen was in an altercation outside a South Bend bar over the weekend and ended up with at least one black eye. No confirmation on whether he was winning for the first three quarters of the fight.
What’s so hot about Florida?Florida football coach Urban Meyer said Monday he plans to coach at Florida “as long as they’ll have me” and he is not considering leaving his current job to take over at Notre Dame. That’s OK. Notre Dame deserves a coach who isn’t willing to settle for annual national title runs, an unlimited supply of blue chip recruits and 70-degree winter days.
Who brought the time machine? The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs won games over playoff contenders on Sunday, with the Raiders knocking off the Bengals and the Chiefs upsetting the Steelers. Usually, it’s the jerseys that look like the 1970s, not the results. I double-checked the box scores just to make sure George Blanda and Jan Stenerud weren’t involved. Also, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell vowed to spare no expense in investigating the disappearance of the Denver Broncos.
Change of mind: No chargeThe 49ers will drop tampering charges against the Jets over rookie receiver Michael Crabtree. The charges stemmed from TV analyst Deion Sanders saying two teams were willing to pay Crabtree what he wanted while holding out. Unfortunately, the decision cannot require Sanders to stop talking.
There’s always one in every crowdMinnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer received 27 of 28 first-place votes in the American League Most Valuable Player voting. The other first-place vote went to the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera. To be fair, Cabrera was indeed more valuable to the Twins in the season’s final week.
