Quilyn Upshaw scored 27 points to lead North Side to a 91-75 win over Portage in boys basketball action in the Holiday Inn Classic at North Side on Friday.

Upshaw, who made 11-of-13 free throws, scored 15 points in the second half to lead the Redskins in their opening game of the season.

D.J. Neal followed Upshaw in scoring for North Side with 16 points and Andy Bachman added 15. Bachman scored 12 in the first half as the Redskins led 47-32 at halftime. Also scoring in double figures for North Side was Jamarcus Smith with 12.

In the other game in the Holiday Inn Classic, Elkhart Memorial edged South Side 61-60. Raphael Davis led South Side with 23 points. The only other player in double figures for the Archers was Xavier Easley with 10.

In other prep action Friday:

Boys basketball

♦Ashton Stevenson scored 19 points and Concordia Lutheran erased a 31-20 halftime deficit to beat Wayne 65-49.

♦Norwell was led by Brandon Gerber with 19 points in its 61-45 win over Fremont.

Girls basketball

♦Chanese Birchfield had 19 points for North Side but the Redskins lost to Columbia City 53-40. The Eagles had four players in double figures with Janelle Moss leading with 12 points.

♦Leo outscored Heritage 26-4 in the second half in a 41-21 win over the Patriots. Alexis Meeks had 13 points to lead the Lions.

♦Brielle Wattley had 17 points and four steals to pace Snider to a 59-54 win over Bellmont. Kaylee Walters played a good all-around game for Snider with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals.

♦Taylor Amber scored 18 points for Churubusco but the Eagles lost to Eastside 60-41.

♦Carroll edged Bishop Dwenger 52-50 as Ciara Geiger scored 12 points and Megan Reader added 11 for the Chargers. The Saints were led by Amanda McKenna with 21 points.
