Youngsters shine in 4-2 Komet win
Sims happy with third period play
of The News-Sentinel

The youngsters are starting to take over for the Fort Wayne Komets.

Rookie Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock, newly signed Justin Chwedoruk and second-year forward Sean O'Connor scored all the goals as the Komets beat Port Huron 4-2 before 7.283 fans at Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.

The Komets have won four of their last five games and are 6-1 at home after O'Connor scored twice in the third period to put the game away.

``I thought we played a great third period,'' Komets coach Al Sims said. ``That was our third game in three nights. As hard as we battled last night in Muskegon, I wasn't sure how much we'd have in the tank for tonight. The guys came out and they weren't going to be denied. I thought we really dominated in the third period and had the better scoring chances and finally got rewarded for it.''

O'Connor's first goal was set up by a Schrock check at the Fort Wayne bench to send O'Connor into the Port Huron zone for a wrist shot. His second goal came on a backhand off a nifty P.C. Drouin pass. The puck hit both posts before trickling over the goal line behind Port Huron netminder Adam Russo.

The Komets have held their last 10 opponents to 70 shots in the third period while getting 98 shots of their own on net, but before Saturday night each side had scored five goals.

``We're having trouble scoring goals and we knew we have to get things to the net and get our bodies to the net,'' Sims said. ``We've got to find a way to get to four (goals) because we're pretty tough to beat when we get three or four goals. Hopefully we'll continue to do that and we'll get some breaks, too.''

The Komets are 8-2 when they score three or more goals.

Fort Wayne led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Schrock and Chwedoruk. It’s the fifth game in a row that Chewdoruk has scored. He has taken over the team lead in goals in only six games.

Port Huron came back in the second period on a breakaway goal by Mike Gershon who came out of the penalty box to take a pass from Daniel Tetrault behind the sleeping Komets’ defense. Then Colin Chaulk was called for a 4-minute high sticking penalty against Port Huron’s Nick Lindberg, setting up a power-play goal by Tetrault against a screened Tim Haun.

``It was a tough break,'' Sims said of the short-handed goal. ``I thought that was going to be a game-changing goal when he came out of the penalty box. It seemed to change the game for a while there, but we came back in the third and took control.''

The Komets, 11-5, are off until Friday when Quad City comes to town.
