Longtime radio personality ‘Diamond Jim Brady' dies

The man known as Diamond Jim Brady to many longtime WOWO radio listeners has died.

James A. Ellenwood Jr., 67, died Saturday at Lutheran Hospital. Born in Fort Wayne, he worked nights at WOWO in the 1960s. He worked at other radio stations before becoming a loan officer at First Security Savings Bank for several years. He had also been an announcer for WPTA, Channel 21.

A release said Ellenwood loved to fish, smoke cigars and collect any gadgets he found interesting, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen, three daughters, a brother, Michael Lee Ellenwood of Fort Wayne, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road. Calling is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes foundation.
