After leading the IPFW men's basketball program for the past five seasons, it appears that Dane Fife will make it six beginning in October.
Fife has been involved in “conversations” with both Michigan and Indiana regarding vacant assistant coaching positions; he said Monday, however, he anticipates being at IPFW next season.
“I am not pursuing the assistant coaching position at Michigan,” Fife said. “I expect to be at IPFW next year.”
He admitted having talks with Wolverine coach John Beilein about the job, but refrained from explaining as to whether any offer was made.
“Those talks are to remain private,” Fife said.
In regards to the same position at Indiana, it appears Fife will not be leaving Fort Wayne for that position either. Hoosier coach Tom Crean is expected to announce the hiring of former Colorado assistant coach Steve McClain for the position, which opened when he fired Roshown McLeod in early March. That fueled speculation as to whether Fife would return to his alma mater to coach.
McClain has spent the past three years as associate head coach at Colorado after serving as head coach at Wyoming for nearly a decade. He was a candidate for the head coaching position at Colorado, which opened when Jeff Bzedlik resigned to take the same position at Wake Forest this week. Colorado announced Monday it was hiring Northern Colorado Coach Tad Boyle.
In more Indiana coaching news, Brian Barone is leaving Crean's program for Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Barone has served as director of basketball operations at Indiana, but is taking an assistant coaching position at UWGB.
