An Illinois-based recycling company plans to open a facility in New Haven, creating 12 jobs with a total payroll of about $485,000 – and possibly more later.
According to documents filed with the Allen County Department of Planning Services, Quincy Recycle Paper Inc. of Quincy, Ill., intends to operate in a 456,280-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility at 2100 Summit St. partially occupied by Corrugated Supplies. Quincy will use the portion formerly occupied by Berne Apparel.
The company, which also has operations in Quincy and suburban Chicago, recycles more than 100,000 tons of paper and plastic annually. Salaries will range from $25,000 to $75,000, and the company is seeking a tax abatement on $633,000 in new equipment that will be needed for the operation. If approved, the abatement would save the company $22,289 over five years. The company may also seek an abatement for improvements to the property, including several loading bays, but those expenses have not been determined. Abatements temporarily reduce the taxes payable on new equipment or buildings.
The company reported sales of about $23.8 million in 2009 and expects to start construction as soon as next month, with opening within 45 days, President Bryan Stokes said.
Stokes said Quincy chose New Haven because it had been looking at expansion into the Fort Wayne market and because it had done business with Corrugated Supplies, with whom it will share the building.
“The building's terrific, and we have the opportunity to do a good volume there,” he said, adding that Quincy specializes in business-to-business recycling but may be interested in municipal contracts in the future. “I hope we can be north of 20 jobs within a year.”
“This is a good thing,” Mayor Terry McDonald said. “It's only 12 jobs, but that's better than no jobs.”
