Program director Barb Richards of local radio station WAJI, 95.1-FM, received the Bob Lind Supporter of the Year national award from the Children's Miracle Network for her efforts to help Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
The award honors one U.S. radio station staff member for his or her extra effort to support a local Children's Miracle Network hospital, which in Indiana is Riley, a Riley news release said.
“Doing work for Riley Hospital for Children has allowed me to marry a purpose to my professional career,” Richard said in reply to an e-mailed question. “Always wanted to do a radiothon; we do it annually for Riley. Always wanted to produce a charity CD, and, with the help of Sweetwater Sound, we just released Majic Miracle Music Volume 5! Always wanted to do a premiere fitness event, and we do the Run for Riley!
“I am lucky our company and our Majic listeners have caught the fire of my passion,” she said. “Going above and beyond for Riley? Easy ... I get to be a part of a miracle! Who would pass on that?”
Richards began helping Riley in 2002 with the start of the Majic Riley Radiothon. For two days each September, the “Majic in the Morning” team shares stories about how Riley has impacted children and families, and invites listeners to pledge a donation, the news release said.
Richards since has expanded WAJI's involvement to a year-round effort, including the annual release of the “Majic Miracle Music” CD. WAJI arranges for musicians, some of whom are nationally known, to record songs for the CD, which sells for $10. All proceeds go to Riley Hospital. The 2010 CD was released Nov. 22.
Richards also coordinates the Ride for Riley in the Three Rivers Festival parade; emcees the annual Fort Wayne Riley annual luncheon; and serves on the Fort Wayne Riley Leadership committee, the news release said.
