The new $36 million distribution center that General Mills plans to build in southern Allen County will add up to 65 jobs to the company's existing workforce of 78, said Andi Udris, president of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance, Tuesday morning. Udris was one among a throng of state, local and company officials who formally announced the project. Udris said average wages in the new jobs would be $16 to $18 an hour. For comparison, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the median hourly wage in Allen, Wells and Whitley counties at $14.96 an hour. The 1.5 million-square-foot facility will be built along Bluffton Road between Pleasant Center and Winters roads, about a quarter mile from the former Nestle warehouse that General Mills has leased since 2001. When the distribution center is finished, all the General Mills employees will work there. The company's brands include Pillsbury, Green Giant, Cheerios and Betty Crocker.
