The Indianapolis Colts are looking for a new coach after owner Jim Irsay and general manager Ryan Grigson announced the firing of Jim Caldwell on Tuesday. Here are few coaches whose names will be mentioned as possibilities:
Marty Mornhinweg, Eagles offensive coordinator
Mornhinweg, 49, has been with the Philadelphia since 2003, and he's been the offensive coordinator since 2006. He's been responsible for a dynamic offense with Michael Vick the last couple years. His only head coaching experience was with the Lions in 2000 and 2001. He was 5-27. He has coached a lot of football and learned much more, presumably, since then. He has a connection with Grigson, who worked in Philadelphia before taking the Colts job.
Mike Zimmer, Bengals defensive coordinator
Zimmer, 55, took over as Bengals defensive coordinator for the 2008 season and within a year had been named assistant coach of the year by Pro Football Weekly for guiding the Bengals to the 4th-ranked defense in the league. They were seventh this season.
Joe Philbin, Packers offensive coordinator
Philbin, 50, has been the Packers coordinator since 2007 and has led the offense to Top 10 rankings in scoring and yardage in each of those seasons. He has coached high profile quarterbacks in Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, so he would presumably be at home with Peyton Manning and possible draft pick Andrew Luck.
Bill Cowher, NFL analyst
Cowher, 54, has been retired since he left his one and only team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, after the 2006 season. He enjoys his role as a television analyst, but his name crops up for almost every coaching opening. He was 149-90-1 with the Steelers, with one Super Bowl title after the 2005 season.
Jim Tressel, former Ohio State coach
Tressel, 59, cannot go back to the college game immediately because of NCAA violations. But on the field, he is a tremendous coach. Can he coach the pro game? Lou Holtz couldn't. Jim Harbaugh can. So it's a guess. But he's on the Colts staff right now.
Chip Kelly, Oregon head coach
Kelly, 48, has a 34-6 record in three seasons as the Ducks' coach. He has won multiple coach of the year awards and is offen praised for his high-scoring, innovative offensive style. Former Colts coach Tony Dungy once said Kelly would be at the top of his list if he were looking for an NFL coach.
