Pedal for fun, competition at Fort4Fitness Spring Cycle event

Friday, May 4, 2012 - 10:39 am

Whether you're a casual bicyclist or a competitive rider, the Fort4Fitness Spring Cycle event has something for you on May 26.

•The Fort4Fitness Tour starts at 10 a.m. with three routes: 19.7 miles, 35.2 miles and 45.25 miles. The routes start and finish at Headwaters Park, 324 S. Clinton St., and meander out into the countryside. Roads will be open to vehicular traffic.

The ride is open to riders of all ages and skill levels, but there is a four-hour time limit. Riders whose pace is too slow must take a shorter route. Each route will have water and aid stations. Cost: $20 adult and $40 family, including up to two adults and eight legal children/dependents under age 13. Additional family members over 13 can register for $20. Note: After May 15, the price increases to $30 per adult and $60 per family. Participants can register the day of the event.

•Bike the Fort starts at 11 a.m., with a second wave starting at 12:30 p.m. It is a casual family ride through downtown streets that will be closed to vehicular traffic. A water/aid station will be on the route. It starts and ends at Headwaters Park and is 3 miles. Prices are same as the Tour event. One registration fee allows you to participate in both events. •The Twilight Criterium is a series of short track, multi-lap, high-speed races open to category 1-5 licensed cyclists only. Non-licensed cyclists wishing to participate can buy a temporary one-day license for an additional $10 surcharge to the registration, which is $40 for early registration and $50 the day of the race.

The course is around Courthouse Square using the following streets: Main, Calhoun, Berry, Webster, and Wayne in a roughly figure eight pattern. The start/finish line will be in front of the Downtown Improvement District offices, 111 W. Wayne St.

Additional information: Helmets are required for all events. Repair stations will be available for cyclists with minor bike problems. Headwaters Park and Lincoln Pavilion will be open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. with cycling and fitness activities. It's free and open to the public.
