TV Diary: George Lindsey was more than 'Goober Pyle'

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 - 12:01 am

I would be remiss if I did not dedicate a column to George Lindsey, who passed away earlier this month after suffering from a brief illness. Ya'll would remember the 83-year-old actor as Goober Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show.”

He also appeared as the same character on “Mayberry R.F.D.” and “Hee Haw,” but had appeared on “M*A*S*H,” “ChiPs,” The Rifleman,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Love, American Style” and other shows.

Here are some trivia questions about his career, as well as on the shows on which he appeared:

1. George Lindsey portrayed the cousin of a popular character who eventually left “The Andy Griffith Show.” Who was this popular character who had another TV series named for him?

2. Gene Roddenberry originally picked Lindsey to star on “Star Trek” as which character?

3. When Andy Griffith ended his series, Lindsey continued his Goober Pyle character on “Mayberry R.F.D.” Who was the lead actor on this series?

4. Who hosted “Hee Haw?”

5. In a guest appearance on “M*A*S*H,” Lindsey portrayed a visiting cracker-jack surgeon who impressed Col. Sherman Potter enough to request he be permanently transferred to the 4077th. However, that meant that this surgeon would be transferred out. Which one?

Answers: 1. Gomer Pyle. 2. Spock. 3. Ken Berry. 4. Roy Clark and Buck Owens. 5. Capt. Benjamin Franklin Pierce.
