NOVI, Mich. — A businessman wants to revive the Michigan State Fair with private funding, a new name and a new location.

The Detroit News reports Blair Bowman, owner of the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, presented a plan this week to City Council to hold the Great Lakes State Fair at the suburban Detroit site over Labor Day weekend. He said he would donate the use of the expo, conference and banquet center.

Bowman says the fair "is something the state desperately should have and needs."

The event would include indoor livestock exhibits, entertainment, education stations and product displays, as well as outdoor rides, a beer garden and entertainment stages.

The Michigan State Fair, which opened in 1849, was the nation's oldest and last was held in 2009 in Detroit.
