INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana National Guardsman has died in Afghanistan from injuries he suffered in a rocket propelled grenade attack.
Spc. Arronn D. Fields died following the May 21 attack that occurred while he was on a mounted patrol. WTHR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/JlTMEz ) the 27-year-old soldier had enlisted in the National Guard in 2006 and was a graduate of Northview High School in Brazil.
Fields was from Knightsville in southwestern Indiana's Clay County. He deployed in January with the 381st Military Police Company, 81st Troop Command as part of a multiunit military police force called Task Force Guardian.
Indiana National Guard adjutant general Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger says the state owes Fields "an un-payable debt" for his service.
Umbarger said Fields is the Indiana Guard's 23rd fallen soldier since 2001.
