Man in critical condition after slipping under water at lake

A man was in critical condition Saturday he reportedly slipped under the water surface at Fox Island.

According to the Allen County Sheriff's Department, the man is 34 years old, but his identity was not released. Around 11:30 a.m., the sheriff's department and representatives from the Department of Natural Resources responded to Bowman Lake to check on reports of an unresponsive adult.

Witnesses told investigators that the man was swimming in the lake when he began to struggle and then went under the water surface. Several people went into the water after him and were able to find him and bring him to shore, the release said.

Resuscitation efforts were performed and the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department and the Department of Natural Resources.
