INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police say a 14-year-old girl was driving when a car slammed into a tree, leaving three young males critically injured.

The three males are hospitalized at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Their names and ages haven't been released, but WTHR-TV reports all are between the ages of 14 and 16.

Indianapolis Metro Police spokesman Anthony Schneider says the girl also was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Schneider says witnesses have told investigators that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and the car left the road and struck a tree head-on. The engine compartment of the car caught on fire, and bystanders helped the passengers out of the vehicle.
