AUBURN — A judge has approved a $300,000 settlement for the estate of a woman who was fatally shot at a northeastern Indiana group home on New Year's Day 2010.
The estate of 32-year-old Melissa Kay Patrick contended she had called management at Res-Care Inc. in Auburn saying she didn't want to report for work because she had received about 400 text messages from her boyfriend in the previous 24 hours and feared for her life. The lawsuit claimed Patrick was ordered to report to work.
The Star of Auburn reports that attorneys for the estate said they ran into problems when they couldn't find who Patrick told she was afraid to report for work.
Ronnie Jones of Fort Wayne is serving a 103-year prison sentence for the attack.
