Fort Wayne Police reported that a Huntington man has died after originally being injured when the motorcycle he was operating struck a deer Monday afternoon.
The incident took place around 2:52 p.m. in the 9600 block of West Jefferson Boulevard, according to the police department.
Officers at the scene reported that a motorcycle rider was driving west on West Jefferson in the right lane when a deer came out of the woods and into oncoming traffic.
Witnesses reportedly told officers that the deer ran into the path of the motorcyclist, who attempted an evasive maneuver but struck the deer. The cyclist went down and was separated from his motorcycle.
The Allen County Coroner's Office on Tuesday identified the man as 51-year-old Robert C. Mayo of Huntington. Mayo was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
A vehicle behind Mayo's motorcycle tried to avoid him and his bike by swerving into the left lane, but ran over Mayo in the process. Mayo was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
