The Fort Wayne Police Department is cautioning the public about bogus calls that appear to be from Crime Stoppers, the longtime tips program.
A news release from the police department said Monday that the local Crime Stoppers office has been flooded with telephone calls from residents concerned that they have been contacted, via an 800 number, that appears on caller identification as "Crime Stoppers."
Complainants reported that the caller asks for information such as the address associated with the telephone number and other information about the layout of their home.
“At no time will Crime Stoppers contact anyone to inquire about their home address or to ask for any other personal information, nor will Crime Stoppers seek any monetary donations by way of a telephone call,” said Greg Lewis of Crime Stoppers.
Lewis believes the calls are being placed by a home security firm seeking to sell its services.
