Amendment in fight against drug sales signed Tuesday

Wednesday, June 13, 2012 - 6:50 am

An amendment to an ordinance approved last Tuesday by Fort Wayne City Council, meant to force landlords who own commercial property to evict small stores dealing under the table in synthetic drugs, was signed Tuesday afternoon.

In a brief ceremony, Deputy Mayor Mark Becker signed the new ordinance into law as City Councilman Geoff Paddock, D-5th, watched and fielded questions from local media. Paddock authored the amendment.

Last week, City Council unanimously passed the measure, adding small convenience stores and other small businesses to the city's drug house ordinance, which requires landlords to evict tenants caught selling drugs.

According to a press release from Paddock, he had worked on the issue with former Superior Court Judge Kenneth Scheibenberger.
