Kendallville Mayor W. Suzanne Handshoe said Friday that automotive supplier Johnson Controls would be laying off workers.
Johnson Controls officials would not confirm information about the layoffs.
According to our news partner, WANE, NewsChannel 15, Johnson Controls Interior Manufacturing told the plant’s 180 employees Friday the company plans to close the Kendallville plant by Aug. 31 because it isn’t operating at full capacity.
The plant makes plastic injection molded parts. Handshoe told WANE that the company wanted to expand but couldn’t at the current site.
Last week, the company said told the state it would temporarily lay off 279 people in Northwood in northwest Ohio. They would be recalled as new-model Jeep production begins, according to the Toledo (Ohio) Blade.
The company plans to build a $200 million automotive battery plant in China, according to The Associated Press.
