New system can target emergency alerts

Saturday, June 16, 2012 - 6:09 am

Allen County residents soon will have a new way to learn about severe weather and other emergencies.

The Commercial Mobile Alert System will allow people with an enabled mobile device to receive geographically targeted test-lie messages alerting them to imminent threats. The system allows government officials to target alerts to specific areas through cell towers, which push the information to dedicated receivers in CMAS-enabled mobile devices. If alerts are received, residents should follow instructions and seek additional information from radio, TV and other official sources.

Some phones can be upgraded to receive the alerts. In other cases, a subscriber may need to buy a CMAS-capable device. Customers should check with their wireless carrier, and more information is available at www.fema.gov/;emergency/ipaws/cmas.
