TV Diary: John Lennon documentary tonight inspires quiz on his song lyrics

Tuesday, June 19, 2012 - 12:01 am

If you receive the BBC America cable channel, you will enjoy the John Lennon documentary, “Discovering Lennon,” at 9 p.m. today.

Commentators Mark Ronson, Damien Hirst and John Simm discuss Lennon's ideas and his impact on society.

I always enjoyed Lennon's music because he was so insightful into the human condition, especially his own. When he wrote “Help!” as part of The Beatles, he said the song represented how he felt about his life at the time.

After The Beatles broke up, Lennon was free to make his music the way he wanted it to be, he was free to be a dad and he was free to exist the way he wanted to.

Below are lyrics to some of Lennon's most memorable songs as a solo artist. Can you name the songs?

1. “I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one.”

2. “However distant don't keep us apart/After all it is written in the stars.”

3. “A million workers working for nothing/You better give 'em what they really own.”

4. “Better get yourself together darlin'/Join the human race.”

5. “Although our love is still special,/Let's take our chance and fly away somewhere alone.”

6. “Another year over/And a new one just begun.”

7. “They nail you to the paper, put a rope around your neck.”

Answers: 1. “Imagine.” 2. “Woman.” 3. “Power To The People.” 4. “Instant Karma.” 5. “Starting Over.” 6. “Happy Christmas (War Is Over).” 7. “Move Over Ms. L.”
