Jewelry store employee injured in 2nd Wednesday robbery

In serious condition after 2 men hold up Do's Jewelers on East State

Thursday, June 21, 2012 - 7:21 am

An employee at Do's Jewelers, 2809 E. State Blvd., was in serious condition Wednesday after reportedly being struck in the head and face with a handgun during a robbery. Police have detained a suspect in connection with the case.

According to a Fort Wayne Police Department news release, police responded to the store at about 10:40 Wednesday morning on a report of an armed robbery.

Police said two men demanded cash at gunpoint from the male jewelry store employee. At some point during the robbery, the employee was struck in the face and head with a handgun by one of the men.

Any loss to the store is undetermined at this time, according to the release.

Police stopped a red and gray Blazer in the 3200 block of Wayne Trace soon after the robbery. Investigators believe it is a possible get-away vehicle, according to the news release. Police allegedly found unspecified evidence in the vehicle and charged the driver, Stafford A. Staples Jr., 18, of Fort Wayne, with robbery, a Class B felony.

Two others believed to be connected to the robbery remain at large, according to police.

Police are encouraging anyone with information to call the Fort Wayne Police Department at 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867. Calls made to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and a cash reward is possible for information received.
