Saturday shooting death ruled a homicide; identity of victim released

Sunday, June 24, 2012 - 4:45 pm

The shooting death of a man found Saturday afternoon sitting in a vehicle has been ruled a homicide.

The Allen County Coroner's Office on Sunday said that 43-year-old Jerry W. Barker of Fort Wayne was the person found around 1:34 p.m. in an idling vehicle in the 900 block of Herman Street. Barker was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Officers were dispatched to Herman Street to investigate reports of a shooting, and a witness told investigators that they heard a shot or shots, saw Barker in the vehicle and another man running east from the location, according to information previously released by the Fort Wayne Police Department.

The cause of death was ruled to be by gunshot wound - the coroner's office does not release how many times a person was shot - and the homicide ruling is the 19th of the year in Allen County.

The shooting remains under investigation by the police department, coroner's office and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.
