Fort Wayne Police said in a news release Monday that Micquail L. Thomas, 18, of Fort Wayne remains hospitalized in serious condition after being shot by Officer Anthony M. Shefferly on Saturday evening during a foot pursuit in which shots were exchanged.
Shefferly was commissioned in October 2007 with the Fort Wayne Police Department and remains on administrative leave. Fort Wayne Police procedure in a police-action shooting is to place the officer involved on paid leave.
Officers were dispatched Saturday around 9 p.m. to the area of South Hanna Street and East Leith Street to investigate reports of a shooting, according to the department. When they arrived, officers and paramedics found a man who had an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics provided aid to the man before taking him to a local hospital in serious condition, the release said.
The release said a Fort Wayne police officer stopped Thomas, who was riding a moped, on a routine traffic stop at the corner of South Hanna and East Leith when a foot pursuit took place and shots were allegedly fired. Thomas was fleeing from the moped when he was shot. A gun was found at the scene, according to the release.
The incident is being investigated by the police department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.
