As of 5 p.m. Saturday, Indiana Michigan Power Co. reported, about 72,000 of the 78,000 Allen County customers who lost power in storms Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning are still without power.
I&M spokesman David Mayne said that about 80 additional utility workers have arrived among more than 200 en route from other states to help repair damaged facilities. Despite the help, he said it still appears that it may be late Wednesday before all the utility's Allen County customers have their power restored.
“Fort Wayne seemed to be the place that got the brunt of this storm,” Mayne said. “It's very comparable (in the extent of damage) to the ice storm in 2008.”
The utility had planned to begin distributing free ice to people here tonight, but Mayne said it encountered difficulties with the distributor who was to supply it. He said the I&M will provide information on a planned distribution of ice Sunday as soon as details are confirmed.
