Storm update: Some Fort Wayne outages to last through weekend

City, county will ask for disaster declaration

Monday, July 2, 2012 - 3:00 pm

While 80 percent of Indiana Michigan Power's Fort Wayne-area customers would have power restored by Wednesday night, some outages likely would not be fixed until the weekend, I&M said Monday.

Meanwhile, Fort Wayne and Allen County officials have said they will ask for a disaster declaration as a first step toward possible assistance from the federal government. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said Monday that storm damage has been at least $1.2 million.

About 51,000 customers in the Fort Wayne area remained without power Monday after a powerful storm Friday downed hundreds of trees and caused more than 80,000 outages in Allen County.

I&M would have full power restored to 80 percent of its Fort Wayne-area customers by late Wednesday and would work through the weekend to fix problems in small pockets of customers and individual properties, the company said in a statement.
