Several media outlets are reporting "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Matlock" star Andy Griffith died today at the age of 86 at his home in North Carolina.
Griffith is best known as the slow-talking, even-tempered Sheriff Andy Taylor during his year on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1960-1968, Internet Movie Database (IMDb) reports.
Griffith played a widower who was raising his son, Opie, played by Ron Howard, with the help of his bubbly Aunt Bee, played by the late Frances Bavier.
The show also helped launch the career of Don Knotts, who played the hot-tempered, and easily flustered Deputy Barney Fife.
Re-runs of "The Andy Griffith Show" currently air at noon and 12:30 p.m. weekdays on local television station WFFT, Channel 55.1.
Griffith also starred as criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock in "Matlock" from 1986 to 1995, IMDb reports.
