Two dead in motorcycle-vehicle crash

Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 6:33 am

A man and woman on a motorcycle were killed after noon Wednesday in a collision with a car.

The Fort Wayne Police Department was called at 12:12 p.m. to the 2700 block of Ardmore Avenue for a critical injury crash. Officers arrived to find the crash involved a passenger car and a motorcycle.

The two occupants of the motorcycle were unconscious and unresponsive when officers arrived, according to a news release from FWPD spokesman Officer Jason Anthony. Paramedics and fire fighters arrived and pronounced the male occupant of the motorcycle dead. The female motorcycle rider was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The female driver and sole occupant of the passenger car was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The names of the victims were not released.

Police believe the passenger car was traveling southbound and the motorcycle was going northbound in the 2700 block of Ardmore. Witnesses reported the car's driver crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle head on, causing the motorcycle to catch fire, according to the release. Witnesses gave medical aid to the victims until emergency workers arrived.

The motorcycle riders were not wearing helmets and police don't know if the car's driver was wearing a seatbelt, according to the release. At this time police don't believe alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash.

Ardmore Avenue remained closed to all traffic while the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (F.A.C.T) investigated the incident and processed the scene. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
