Voices of Unity off to defend medals

The local Voices of Unity Youth Choir will compete today through July 14 at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati.

Here is their schedule:

•July 4: Performed “I Can” with Kirk Franklin at Opening Ceremony

•Saturday: Popular Choral Music Competition, 7:30 p.m.

•Wednesday: Gospel Music Competition, 3 p.m.

•July 12: Celebration Concert, 7:30 p.m., singing Gospel and Spiritual selections

•July 14: Closing Ceremony, 7 p.m., singing “I Can” with Kirk Franklin and other choirs

The choir won gold medals in the Gospel and Spiritual Music and the Popular Music categories at the World Choir Games in July 2010 in Shaoxing, China. For more information, go to www.upaf.com/gold.

Buzz Maxwell Day this Friday

Local rock radio station WXKE, 103.9-FM, will celebrate the life of one of its former air personalities, Buzz Maxwell, on Friday by playing some of his air checks and telling stories about him throughout the day, station Program Director Rick “Doc” West said.

Maxwell, 52, whose real name is Richard Davis, died June 27 at St. Joseph Hospital. He worked about 14 years at WXKE before leaving about four years ago, West said.

Maxwell had been in ill health for many years, West said.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road. Visitation is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Memorials are to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.

Motorcycle ride planned

Motorcyclists are invited to participate in Freedom Ride 2012 beginning at 7 p.m. today at : Ehlerding's River City Harley-Davidson, 5525 Indiana 930E between Fort Wayne and New Haven.

To honor American military personnel past and present, motorcycle riders will travel from Ehlerding's to the National Military History Center in Auburn.

Registration opens at 5 p.m. A Flag Ceremony will take place at 7:15 p.m., and riders then will drive to the National Military History Center.

Food from Quaker Steak & Lube will be available for purchase at the National Military History Center.

Audition held

First Presbyterian Theater will hold an early audition for the role of Artie Shaugnessy (male 40-50 years old) in “House of Blue Leaves.” The rest of the show will be cast in early January.
