Kosciusko County has two separate fatal accidents

Friday, July 6, 2012 - 11:58 am

Warsaw man killed

A Warsaw man was killed Thursday night when his car crashed west of Warsaw after hitting a utility pole, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Emergency workers were called at 9:16 p.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Kosciusko County Road 350 West just north of County Road 200 North. Officers found a destroyed 1996 Ford Contour in a cornfield on the west side of County Road 350 West. Shaun C. Owens, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt-force trauma, according to Kosciusko County Deputy Coroner Mike Wilson.

Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. team officers said Owens had been northbound on County Road 350 West and had lost control of his vehicle, a witness said, according to a news release. Owens had over-corrected after coming over a small hill and slid off the road and into a utility pole. Owens had been wearing his seatbelt, but due to the severity of the impact, he was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.

Illinois man injured, wife killed in Gold Wing crash

An off-duty police officer from Illinois was severely injured and his wife later died after the tire of their Honda Gold Wing motorcycle blew out Thursday, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

The driver, Thomas C. Harwood, 44, of Bourbonnais, Ill., was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered serious injuries to his head and extremities and extensive road-rash in the accident at 11:48 a.m. along U.S. 30 west of Pierceton. He was airlifted to Parkview Regional Trauma Center in Fort Wayne in critical condition and was in serious but stable condition early this morning.

His wife, Paula M. Harwood, 39, was also ejected but believed to have been struck by the motorcycle as it was flipping and rotating from the crash. She later died at 3:32 p.m. from head injuries she received, according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.

Neither was wearing a helmet, according to police.
