The Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that a 2-year-old girl drowned at Salomonie Reservoir in Huntington County at around 3:30 p.m. Monday.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday ruled the girl's death an accidental drowning.
The girl, whose name was not released, was with a group of family and friends playing in shallow water along the western shore of Monument Island, almost directly across the lake from the Lost Bridge east public access site, according to a DNR news release. While playing in the water, everyone lost sight of the girl. When they looked in her direction they noticed she was missing and an immediate search began. Within minutes of last seeing the girl, she was found submerged in shallow water along the island.
Once out of the water, CPR was started on the girl and she was taken across the lake by boat to the public access site. Mt. Etna Fire Department , Parkview EMS, and the Parkview Samaritan crews tried other life-saving efforts but the girl was pronounced dead at the site.
