Fort Wayne storm-debris site fire put out

Saturday, July 14, 2012 - 6:58 am

The Fort Wayne Fire Department is investigating what caused a brush fire this morning at a storm debris drop-off site in Shoaff Park.

Crews arrived at 3:38 a.m. to find a large fire, according to FWFD spokeswoman Stacey Fleming. Firefighters saw the fire moving toward to the forest directly behind the pile. They pushed back the flames, containing the fire to the debris pile and got it under control by 4:14 a.m., according to Fleming.

The fire department was working this morning with the city’s parks and street departments who brought in heavy loader apparatus to move the pile and break it apart so the fire department could continue to extinguish any remaining fire and hot spots throughout the morning. No injuries were reported.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

The site is for dumping debris from June 29’s storm that downed numerous trees and branches.
