INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's unemployment rate moved up slightly to a seasonally adjusted 8.0 percent for June, marking the first increase since last summer.
Allen and five other northeast Indiana counties all had lower unemployment rates in June than did the state as a whole. The unadjusted unemployment rate in Indiana was 8.3 percent last month, higher than Allen County’s rate of 7.8 percent.
Wells County’s rate was lowest in the region at 6.8 percent. Whitley, Lagrange, Huntington and Adams counties all were lower than the statewide rate, too. Noble and Wabash counties tied for the highest unemployment rates in the region, at 8.8 percent each.
Figures released Friday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana's jobless rate went up from May's 7.9 percent, with nearly 266,000 people looking for jobs last month.
The state's jobless rate has been going down steadily since it was at 9.3 percent last August. The new state rate is slightly below the national mark of 8.2 percent.
State officials say Indiana has a job growth rate of 1.5 percent so far this year, topping the national rate of 0.9 percent.
Eastern Indiana's Fayette County has the state's highest unemployment mark for June at 11.4 percent.
