GARY — Northwestern Indiana police are investigating the grisly discovery of a man's severely burned body in a vacant lot in Gary.

The partially charred, crumpled body was found Tuesday morning by a woman returning home in Gary's Aetna neighborhood. The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports that police found a container of an accelerant near the man's body.

Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said the man's body has not been identified, but police believe he is an older black male who had been in an altercation sometime Monday night or early Tuesday.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner P.J. Adams says the man's remains showed signs of possible head trauma, but an autopsy is pending.
