A crash involving five vehicles claimed the life of a small child on Friday afternoon.
According to a news release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, the crash took place around 3:20 p.m. on U.S. 30 westbound, between Interstate 69 and Kroemer Road. Preliminary investigation indicates that four vehicles were stopped at a traffic light at Kroemer Road when a semitrailer approached the intersection and did not slow or stop, according to the police department.
The semitrailer struck a Pontiac minivan that was transporting two small children, one of whom died. The other three vehicles -- a Mercury SUV, a Ford pickup truck and a Chevrolet pickup truck -- were caught in a chain-reaction crash, with the Chevrolet pickup rolling over onto its top as a result of the collision's impact.
The child who died, a girl, was originally listed in critical condition at the scene of the crash. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to the police department. Her identity has not been released.
Five others were transported for medical attention; no conditions were immediately available, police said.
