Fort Wayne making progress on debris sites

Thursday, August 2, 2012 - 2:04 pm

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation officials expect workers to have all but one of the city's temporary storm-debris dump sites cleared by early next week.

Contractors were grinding up and hauling away huge piles of brush Thursday at the Swinney Park Pool, one of the three official dump sites that were set up after the severe wind storms June 29 and July 5.

Parks department spokeswoman Natalie Eggeman said the contractors would likely finish at Swinney Park by early next week and move on to the last official dump site to be cleared, the Tillman Road dump, or an unofficial site at the former McMillen Park ice arena. The other official dump site at Shoaff Park has already been cleared.

The city set up the sites after two powerful storms toppled hundreds of trees and limbs. This week, city crews started a second round of curbside pickup for residents with leftover debris.
