Work at Interstate 69 and Union Chapel Road was set back at least two nights because of a beam that fell during construction Wednesday, blocking part of I-69 for more than five hours, the Indiana Department of Transportation said.
Because of the accident, northbound traffic saw periodic stoppages Wednesday night through 5 a.m. today, with more brief closures scheduled for 9 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Friday, INDOT spokeswoman Mary Foster said. Work on the northbound side was supposed to last only through Wednesday morning.
The accident happened just after 12 a.m. Wednesday as crews worked to place large cement beams along the northbound lanes as part of the new Union Chapel Road interchange. One of the beams fell as it was being lifted into place, damaging an existing beam, Foster said.
Crews must do the same work on the southbound side of I-69, but Foster said she did not know when that phase would begin after the delays.
