Leo's football team lost a few key players from last season, but it appears the Lions haven't lost any steps.
Leo dominated Norwell 56-14 in the season opener for both teams Friday at Leo.
One question about the team – how would senior quarterback Sam Waters fare stepping in for graduated Ryan Leiter – was answered quickly: He hit the field running, or at least throwing.
Waters hit senior wide receiver Jackson Boyce with a 27-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started, and didn't look back. Waters threw two more touchdown passes: 36 yards to senior wide receiver Fazaun Stephens and 16 yards to another senior wide receiver, A.J. Busche.
“I thought they they did a great job,” Leo coach Jared Sauder said. “You saw early on, Sam made some plays and did a nice job for us. Later in the game, Rance Harris at tailback had kind of a surprise game for us. The O-line did a nice job. Overall, this team answered a lot of questions.”
Harris rushed 16 times for 100 yards for Leo and Reid Rohrbacher rushed 13 times for 55 yards.
Leo took advantage of two early Norwell turnovers, the first a fumble and the second a pass picked off by Rohrbacher.
“We were fortunate to get those mistakes early and we did a good job taking advantage of them,” Sauder said. “I'm awfully proud of the guys and defensively, especially, we did a good job.”
